Description
Problems are more than a single pain point. They are a complex interaction of stakeholders, with similar or conflicting goals (jobs to be done), each encountering pain points that add up to a larger problem, or root cause.
This is why the point of the Discovery phase is not necessarily to identify a single problem in a vacuum, but rather map the entire problem landscape and context, also called the problem space.
The problem space is built up of multiple dimensions, as outlined below, and is summarised in the problem statement.
The dimensions of the problem space are: the stakeholder landscape • the jobs to be done (JTBD) • the problem tree • the current solutions (alternatives)
